Millmoor, Rotherham

 History

Millmoor was the home ground of Rotherham United F.C., until a dispute over ownership forced them to move to the Don Valley Stadium in nearby Sheffield and more recently the newly built New York Stadium.

The stadium was built in 1907 on the site of a flour mill, and presently holds around 8,300. Redevelopment work was started on the ground, with a new main stand being built in place of the previous wooden main stand which was built in the 1950s. The new stand was planned to contain corporate facilities and bring the capacity back to over 10,000. The work was scheduled to finish in 2006, but has faced a series of setbacks, one of which was Japanese Knotweed being found on the site.

Water Board Filter House, Low Bradfield, Sheffield

History

The former water board filter houses filtered water from the Agden, Dale Dike (the cause of the Great Flood of Sheffield in 1864) and Strines reservoirs in Bradfield Dale. The filter houses were built in 1913 and extended in 1953.

At the time the water works were the cutting edge in technology and reportedly had the first telephone installed in Bradfield in the 1930's.

In 1974 the Yorkshire Water Authority took over and later during the Thatcher government the entire UK water industry was privatised with the Water Act of 1989.

The filter house was closed in 1995 when a new water treatment works was opened in the Loxley Valley.

Firth Brown Medical Centre, Sheffield

History

It looks as though this place was a kind of infirmary building belonging to Firth Brown steel which had works in the surrounding area. Workers may have come here to see a nurse if they had suffered an injury at work.

Since then there has been a stone wall built around the outside and the area around the building has been backfilled with a car park built on top, making the medical centre essentially underground.

Some history on Firth Brown:

Firth Brown Steels was initially formed in 1902, when Sheffield steelmakers John Brown & Company exchanged shares and came to a working agreement with neighbouring company Thomas Firth & Sons. In 1908 the two companies came together and established the Brown Firth Research Laboratories and it was here, in 1912, under the leadership of Harry Brearley they developed high chrome stainless steel. The companies continued under their own management until they formally merged in 1930 becoming Firth Brown Steels. The company is now part of Sheffield Forgemasters.

History

There is little history available on this place other than that it was once a rather grand private residential property that had since been converted in to a beauticians, and reportedly previously occupied as a brothel!
